DNA Says Thomas Jefferson Fathered Slave's Child

On November 5, 1998, scientists announced the results of a DNA analysis suggesting that Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the third U.S. president, had fathered at least one child with his slave Sally Hemings. Freed upon Jefferson's death, Eston Hemings (1808-1856) became a carpenter and then a musician.
